Restoration of Porchester Pool Hall, Bayswater.
We were proud to supply our Chlorinated Rubber Paint System, comprising RP10 Primer and R10 High Performance Chlorinated Rubber Finish, for the ambitious and historically sensitive refurbishment of the iconic Porchester Pool Hall, located within the Grade II* Listed Porchester Centre in Bayswater, London.
A Careful Restoration of a 1925 Architectural Gem
Originally constructed in 1925, the main pool at the Porchester Centre is a striking example of interwar public architecture. Following the award-winning restoration of the adjacent teaching pool in 2018, Westminster Council undertook a full refurbishment of the main swimming pool during the COVID-19 pandemic closures.
This extensive renovation was carried out with a strong emphasis on heritage conservation. The project included vital structural work, such as the strengthening of pool walls, repairs to long-standing cracks, new reinforced wall structures and the installation of new entry steps. All new work was completed with waterproof tanking and finished with custom-designed tiling, in full compliance with listed building planning conditions.
High-Performance Paints for a Demanding Environment
The pool hall ceiling, last painted in 2002 with a chlorinated rubber system, had performed exceptionally well over two decades. With the pool drained for re-tiling, it provided an ideal opportunity to refresh the ceiling paintwork using our latest Chlorinated Rubber Paint specification.
Given the continued use of the adjacent learner pool and changing rooms during refurbishment, the specification also had to account for low solvent migration and safe indoor application.
Our RP10 Primer was used for localised spot-priming on areas affected by previous water ingress, followed by full application of our R10 Chlorinated Rubber High Performance Finish Coat.
Colour Matching to Period Detail
To match the aesthetic requirements set out by the conservation team, our coatings were colour-matched to complement bespoke ceramic tiles created by Solus Ceramics. These tiles were developed to replicate the original off-white and blue detailing of the pool’s 1920s appearance. The paints were tinted to:
- RAL 1013 Oyster White - used for large ceiling and wall areas
- RAL 8001 Ochre Brown - applied for heritage detailing

Why Choose R10 Chlorinated Rubber Paint?
Indoor swimming pools present a unique challenge when it comes to coatings. Humidity, poor ventilation and exposure to chemicals such as chlorine can all contribute to surface staining, mould and paint degradation. Our R10 Chlorinated Rubber Paint offers excellent resistance to these conditions.
Key benefits of R10 include:
- Resistance to acids, alkalis, oxidising agents and moist gases
- Outstanding durability in high-humidity environments
- Heat resistance up to 75°C
- Ideal for ceilings, walls, floors, pipework and other surfaces in pool enclosures and plant rooms
Products Used:
